I’m a public defender. My clients would rather go to jail than register as sex offenders.

When I first became a public defender, I believed the worst punishment that my clients would face would be time in jail. Since then, I’ve learned that incarceration is not the only — and perhaps not the worst — punishment the criminal justice system can impose. The registration requirements imposed on those convicted of sex offenses are unfairly harsh and punitive, though few recognize them as such. Full Article

Registration is the poison pill that you never get to pass. The only thing worse than being labeled a sex offender in public is being labeled one in prison. If you make one bad choice, it seems you never get a good option in this category.

What’s interesting is that it only takes a high profile case like a child rape, kidnapping, or Brock Turner soft on crime judge incident for politicians to drum up a slew of sex offender laws. But it never happens in high profile shootings because the NRA is so powerful it can buy law makers. Sadly no powerful advocacy group exists for rcs. Even the NRA is shy about defending sex offenders against state laws that limit their firearm rights

RSO’s are among the most persecuted and abused people in the world. Justice lacks proportionality and consistency and seems to be wrongly based on fear, hate, and ignorance. Research conducted by officially acknowledged doctoral professionals clarifies and minimizes distorted perception but is ignored. The public condemnation and caused suffering of 875,000 Americans and their families is an unforgivable tragedy.
